I pushed myself outside my comfort zone in...
‬"Local residents aid refugees in settling down."
As a journalist, I know I have to take initiative. I often worried about who to contact and how to appropriately ask to quote them in my writing. Coupled with the sensitive nature of the topic, I struggled to secure interviews.

From the few interviews I was able to schedule, I asked to be connected to other interested individuals but also fostered a relationship with them outside of the article.
GREAT story, and I know you tried very hard to get hold of a refugee(s) to interview and were not able to do so.

I used a different tone than I am used to in...
"A Domino's coupon gives college students a lot of bang for their buck."
I believe a good writer can write about anything.

While a lighthearted piece like this was outside my norm, I allowed myself to showcase different aspects of my voice, diving into narrative storytelling for this assignment:
Please write 700 to 1000 words on a meal you've had in your dorm. This can be a good meal or a bad meal — but it should be an interesting meal, at least one that would warrant a 700-word review of it. Above all, have fun with it.
Funny! I love details on HOW people eat. This was lovely.
— Prof. Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan, Food & Travel Journalism
I had the hardest time writing...
"Recent increase in anti-Asian violence"
Trigger warning: mentions of violence
This was the hardest piece I ever wrote. As the only person of color on my newspaper staff, I felt burdened, stressed, and anxious. Coupled with this, I was censored in the past, but this time, I refused to be silenced.

This news feature covers xenophobic horror stories during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Atlanta spa shootings hit close to home, shaking me to my core while the world continued on.
Your article moved me to tears. A well written piece addressing a horrible issue that is shocking and gut wrenching. Your words conveyed a lot of compassion and passion about the issue. It was a moving piece that informed while also royally enraged me.
